The purpose of the suspension is to absorb the impact loads applied to the vehicle by the ground as it is driven over rough and uneven terrain. It is important to the handling of the vehicle that the tires translate vertically, staying in contact with the varying terrain, while the chassis and driver stay relatively stable.
